The Planetary Society and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) invite you to send your name and message to Asteroid 1999 JU3 and return to Earth on Hayabusa2.
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is scheduled to launch the asteroid explorer "Hayabusa2" in 2014. The Hayabusa2 will arrive at an asteroid in 2018 to investigate it for one and half years, before returning to Earth in 2020.
How will my name or name and message be delivered?
You can select one of the following application methods. (One person can participate in this campaign only once.)
I. Your name will be delivered to the asteroid on the target marker.
The Hayabusa2 will be equipped with a target marker to touch the asteroid. The target marker will be dispatched to the asteroid, and then landed on its surface to stay there. We will record you name on this marker to deliver it to the asteroid.
II. Time travel with Hayabusa2
The Hayabusa2 re-entry capsule plays a final important role of bringing back samples of sand from the asteroid to the Earth. The capsule will be detached from the main Hayabusa2 probe body, then protect the sample sand from high temperatures at the time of re-entry into the atmosphere, and land on Earth.
Your names and messages will be recorded in the memory chips that will be loaded onto the re-entry capsule, and the capsule with your names and messages will come back to Earth in 2020 (by our current schedule.)
What is the deadline?
12:00 p.m. (Noon) on July 16 (Tue.), 2013 (JST)
In case you send your application through conventional mail, it must be delivered to JAXA within July 16 (Tue.), 2013 (JST.)
