Save NASA Science Press Conference On Monday, October 6, 2025, amid the government shutdown, leaders from 20 national science, education, and space organizations, led by The Planetary Society and its CEO Bill Nye, gathered with Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-MD-04) and invited Members of Congress at the U.S. Capitol to urge protection of NASA’s and the National Science Foundation’s science budgets. The White House’s proposed 47 percent cut to NASA’s science budget threatens an “extinction-level” event for space exploration.

Planetary Society Shoemaker Grant Enabled Discovery of Asteroid 2012 DA14 - Flying Close by Earth on February 15On Friday, February 15, 2013, Asteroid 2012 DA14 will travel just 17,000 miles above the Earth - closer to our planet than the orbit of the communications satellite that broadcast the Super Bowl around the world. The discovery of Asteroid DA14 was made by a small team of observers at La Sagra Observatory in Southern Spain, enabled with a grant provided by The Planetary Society.

Planetary Society Statement on the 2020 Mars Rover Mission AnnouncementThe Planetary Society welcomes the news that NASA will land a new rover on Mars in 2020. However, we emphasize that this announcement does not change the status quo: without Congressional action, NASA’s Planetary Sciences division will suffer cuts of $309 million in the 2013 budget.
