Until we hear: March 2019 MER Mission Manager Scott Lever decided June 11, 2018, the day after Opportunity shut down to wait out the storm, to grow a beard and let it continue to grow “until we hear from Oppy or give up trying.” The selfie on the left was taken about six months later in Jan. 2019. Just before the fall equinox on Mars (Mar. 23, 2019), he decided to shave it off “to see if Murphy would like to embarrass me by waking up the rover a few days later.” Murphy didn’t embarrass him.
