Total lunar eclipse of 2014 A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes into the Earth’s shadow. In this image from a 2014 total lunar eclipse, you can see the Moon often turns a reddish color during the lunar eclipse because some of the red wavelengths of light make it through the Earth’s atmosphere to illuminate the Moon, like lots of simultaneous Sunsets.
