Space Shuttle Challenger in Orbit The Shuttle Pallet Satellite SPAS-01 captured this image of Space Shuttle Challenger on 22 June 1983 during mission STS-7. In order to test the shuttle's ability to capture and service satellites, Challenger released SPAS-01, flew alongside it for awhile, and then recaptured it. STS-7 was also the flight of the first U.S. female astronaut, Sally Ride. NASA
