R.I.P. Spirit and Opportunity are monuments to exploration now. Spirit, left, is resting near Home Plate in the Columbia Hills area of Gusev Crater. "If you look carefully you can actually see a bright trailing leading to Spirit, the result of the rover’s broken wheel being dragged through the dirt,” noted author, poet, and MER Update contributor Stuart Atkinson, who enhanced the color of this image; Opportunity, right, is about halfway down Perseverance Valley, which cuts the western rim of Endeavour Crater in Meridiani Planum. Both images were taken by the HiRISE camera onboard MRO. NASA / JPL-Caltech / University of Arizona / A. McEwen; S. Atkinson
