Pluto's diverse terrain (mosaic with detail images)
Pluto's diverse terrain (mosaic with detail images) A mosaic of images captured as New Horizons flew past Pluto on July 14 contains a wide variety of different kinds of terrain, from smooth, geologically fresh icy plains, to ancient, dark, cratered highlands. This version of New Horizons' second-highest-resolution Pluto mosaic was generated from data downlinked from September 5 to 7, 2015. It is a wider version of this mosaic released during the flyby. NASA / JHUAPL / SwRI

This version of the mosaic shows the locations of two detail images:

Detail: Pluto "chaos region"
Detail: Pluto "chaos region" Detail from this Pluto mosaic showing a 470-kilometer wide region on Pluto at the boundary between more heavily cratered terrain (left) and smooth plains (right). The area in between appears jumbled and broken. NASA / JHUAPL / SwRI
Detail: Pluto "dark areas"
Detail: Pluto "dark areas" Detail from this Pluto mosaic showing a 350-kilometer wide region on Pluto at the boundary between dark-toned, heavily cratered terrain (bottom) and smooth, flat plains (top). Up close, there are areas of lineated terrain that "resemble dunes" but "its origin is under debate." NASA / JHUAPL / SwRI
