Apollo 11 Contingency Sample Thin Section A thin section view of the Apollo 11 contingency sample (lunar sample 10022), collected from the area between the LM and the flag. The rock is a fine-grained, vesicular, high- K ilmenite basalt. In this thin section, the light blue and white mineral is plagioclase. The black is ilmenite, other colors are pyroxene. The large yellow pyroxene in the center is a phenocryst that has been partially resorbed. NASA
