Hinode sees a sunspot from the side
Hinode sees a sunspot from the side The Japanese Sun-observing spacecraft Hinode took this side-view photo of a sunspot on November 20, 2006. The bright streaks follow magnetic field lines that spread outward from the sunspot into the solar atmosphere. At the edges of the sunspot the field lines bend over and reconnect with magnetic field lines of opposite polarity. Hinode JAXA / NASA
