Double-ringed crater on Mercury

Double-ringed crater on Mercury
Double-ringed crater on Mercury A textbook example of a multi-ringed crater on Mercury from MESSENGER's first flyby. Small craters on Mercury have simple bowl shapes. At larger diameters, craters are bowls with central peaks. Craters larger than 200 kilometers (120 miles) in diameter tend to have multiple rings, like this one, which is 270 kilometers (170 miles) across. Outside of the crater is an ejecta blanket spread across the otherwise fairly smooth plains of Mercury's surface. There are also long chains of secondary impact craters radiating beyond the ejecta blanket. NASA / JHUAPL / CIW
