Asteroid Close Calls Five known asteroids larger than 20 meters—the threshold at which an asteroid impact could under the right circumstances cause city-wide damage—have passed or will pass closer to Earth than our geostationary communications satellites. The largest, Apophis, is roughly four times wider than the International Space Station and will make its closest approach to Earth in 2029.
