Veins at Garden City, Curiosity sol 946 Curiosity used the camera on the end of her robotic arm to take a large set of images of some of the complex veins at the site named Garden City on sol 946 (April 5, 2015). The veins combine light and dark material. The veins at this site jut to heights of up to about 6 centimeters above the surrounding rock, and their widths range up to about 4 centimeters. Mineral veins such as these form where fluids move through fractured rocks, depositing minerals in the fractures and affecting chemistry of the surrounding rock. In this case, the veins have been more resistant to erosion than the surrounding host rock. NASA / JPL / MSSS / Paul Hammond
