Mercury's Caloris basin Statistical methods were applied to many images of the northern hemisphere of Mercury to classify areas on the surface according to their spectral characteristics, creating this false-color view. The enormous Caloris basin shows up as a dark orange ellipse surrounded by diffuse dark blue deposits. The southern rim is outlined by several bright orange features, many of which show evidence for past volcanic activity. NASA / JHUAPL / CIW
