B-mode polarization image The first detection of gravitational waves from the very early universe. This image shows the orientation of “B-mode” polarization (lines) of the cosmic microwave background light, superimposed on the strength of the polarization (colors). The pinwheel pattern characteristic of a “B-mode” signal comes from a combination of gravitational lensing in the local universe and primordial gravitational waves. BICEP2 Collaboration
