A Martian Memorial for Everyone Loved and Lost on 9/11
A Martian Memorial for Everyone Loved and Lost on 9/11 Amidst the horrors of 9/11, we were reminded in a unique way of the cost of freedom. We remembered where our freedom has taken us and how it has defined us as Americans. And we came to understand more deeply than ever that freedom is the heart of the human spirit. On the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Opportunity took the image of the American flag on the cable guard of her Rock Abrasion Tool, built and operated by Honeybee Robotics of New York. Made from metal recovered from World Trade Center towers, the flag-draped shield was fashioned onto the instrument shortly after terrorists destroyed the towers on Sep. 11, 2001. “It’s gratifying knowing that a piece of the World Trade Center is up there on Mars,” said Honeybee Robotics Founder and Chairman Stephen Gorevan. “That shield on Mars, to me, contrasts the destructive nature of the attackers with the ingenuity and hopeful attitude of Americans.” NASA / JPL-Caltech / Cornell / ASU
