Mars in the Noachian period Artwork depicting Mars as it might have appeared about 4 billion years ago. The Vastitas Borealis are filled with water. The large lake at the bottom right is Meridiani. The Opportunity rover has found evidence of such an inner sea. Made for National Geoographic's July 2005 issue. Related artwork is available here.
