Global map of Mars from Mariner 9 data (1971) Mariner 9 was the first Mars orbiter. The more than 7,000 images it acquired provided the first detailed views of all of Mars, revealing that the planet had both ancient cratered terrain and more modern tectonized and eroded areas.
