Gale Crater regional context Gale Crater -- Curiosity's landing location -- is easy to spot in wide-angle views of Mars because of its dark "beard" and the black sand dunes that form outlines around Gale's central mound. This view was taken by Mars Orbiter Mission on January 17, 2015.
