Voyager 2 views of Neptune's moons Larissa, Nereid, and Proteus
Voyager 2 views of Neptune's moons Larissa, Nereid, and Proteus This montage of Voyager 2 views of Neptune's moons includes Larissa (upper left) and a crescent Nereid (upper left center); all the others are images of Proteus, a blocky world 436 x 416 x 402 kilometers in size. NASA / JPL / Ted Stryk

To create this view, Stryk says, "I compiled the pixels of some of the empty space from the images in the vertical direction (minus rows that contained moire) and subtracted this from the image. I used several noise reduction methods so as to minimize the loss of detail. I also used a high pass filter to bring out detail, which I merged with other versions of the images so as to bring back the low frequency features." The processed image has an odd texture to it. Some of this texture is likely artifacts induced by the processing. Comparing this image of Proteus to earlier ones in the sequence can help identify which features are real.
