The Planetary Society and its members will hold its annual congressional visits from Sunday, March 3rd through Monday, March 4th, 2019.
With unprecedented budgetary pressures facing the legislative and executive branches of government, it is uncertain which path our nation’s leaders will take with respect to our nation’s space program. More than ever before, it is absolutely critical that the voices of the space advocacy community be heard in this debate. Come join space advocates and Planetary Society members from around the country to let Congress know that there is strong constituent support for an ambitious space program.
We Provide the Meetings
After you register, we will arrange for you to participate in roughly 4 - 6 meetings at various offices on Capitol Hill on Monday, March 4th. Each meeting will be conducted within a group of fellow advocates. We work hard to ensure that your meetings include a visit to your member of Congress and Senators' offices. A full schedule will be provided to you in advance of the event.
We Provide the Training
There will be an information/training session for all registered participants on the afternoon of Sunday, March 3rd and there will also be an optional introductory session for newcomers that same morning (from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.), in preparation for meetings.
Our training ensures you have time to practice your "pitch" to congressional offices, gives you an opportunity to meet your fellow group members, and also to learn about the current political and budgetary landscape facing NASA and space exploration in the U.S. The sessions will be led by The Planetary Society's Director of Space Policy, Casey Dreier. Brendan Curry, The Planetary Society's Chief of Washington Operations, will also be on hand to provide insight into how to speak and focus your arguments.
Formal talking points and other materials will be provided beforehand.
You Provide Your Travel
Every participant is required to organize their own travel to and lodging in Washington, D.C. Our congressional visits occur during a busy time of year in the nation's capitol, so we recommend making your travel plans as soon as possible.
Who Can Register?
Any U.S. citizen over 18 years old is encouraged to join us. Individuals under 18 may participate under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian.
What's it like?
You can read this account by Planetary Society members. Or listen to this episode of the Space Policy Edition podcast:
Society members from 21 states descended on the U.S. capitol for a "blitz" of 178 meetings in two days. Casey and special guest Matt Renninger explain why that is such an important activity, and blitzers Leah and Stefanie Griffith share their story of coming to Washington to speak for space.
There is a first time for everything. Riding a bike, stargazing, and yes, even lobbying Congress. Jack Kiraly describes his first Legislative Blitz with Michael Briganti and Casey Dreier on Capitol Hill last week.
