SETI@home Transitions to BOINC on December 15, 2005

13 December, 2005
December 15, 2005 will mark the end of an era in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). On that day, SETI@home classic, the program that revolutionized both SETI and the world of computing, will shut down. The project will then continue as part of BOINC – the Berkeley Online Infrastructure for Network Computing.

SETI@home holds a special place in the history of The Planetary Society, which was the project’s founding sponsor. Started in 1999 with seed money provided by the Society, the project grew explosively and never stopped growing. By the time it stopped accepting new participants last November, more than 5.4 million users had downloaded the SETI@home software and taken part in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. The Planetary Society is proud of making SETI@home possible and supporting the project through the years.

After December 15, no work units will be sent out to users, and no processed units will be accepted by the SETI@home server. All personal and group statistics, however, will be preserved and will be accessible through the SETI@home website.

6 years and  over 5 million SETI@home participants!

The Planetary Society thanks all of our SETI@home participants for making this revolutionary project such a success.
