Projects: Red Rover Goes to Mars

Project Updates

March 2004: We Make It Happen! Red Rover Goes to Mars, The Planetary Report, Vol XXIIV, No. 1
Wow! We really have made it happen. Not only did the world witness the arrival of three very successful new spacecraft at Mars and a successful comet fly-through, but The Planetary Society also had success beyond our wildest expectations. We set a string of firsts, involved the public in this remarkable time of space exploration, and brought 16 exceptional students to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to work on the Mars Exploration Rover mission and promote the future of Mars exploration. Our connection with MER represents unprecedented public involvement with a NASA mission... More »

May 2002: Student Navigators Train with the Best, The Planetary Report, Vol. XXII, No. 3
On February 12, 2002, a team of eight bright minds assembled in a laboratory at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for a challenging task. Their mission: to simulate two days of exploring Mars with an advanced prototype robotic exploration vehicle. These weren't just any rover engineers -- they were the Red Rover Goes to Mars Student Navigators... More »

May 2001: Red Rover Goes to Mars: Student Scientists Make History, The Planetary Report, Vol. XXI, No. 3
"It was the best week of my life!" This was the overall sentiment of the Red Rover Goes to Mars Student Scientists after a weeklong visit to San Diego to take pictures of Mars using the Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) onboard Mars Global Surveyor (MGS). The students--from India, Hungary, Poland, Taiwan, Brazil, and the United States--earned this unprecedented opportunity through The Planetary Society's Red Rover Goes to Mars Student Scientist essay contest.
