Projects: International Lunar Decade

The Planetary Society has proposed an International Lunar Decade to help coordinate the international efforts toward lunar exploration and to share the results with the world.

The interest of many spacefaring nations in lunar missions is an opportunity to enhance international cooperation and to realize a benefit greater than just that of the individual missions.

May 12, 2008: The International Lunar Network: Exploring the Moon, Together

Taking advantage of the current focus on lunar exploration, NASA is leading an international effort to establish a network of geophysical monitoring stations on the Moon. The venture, known as the "International Lunar Network," or ILN for short, seeks to place between 4 and 8 such bases at selected locations on the Moon in the next decade. Each of the nodes will be launched and operated by different national space agencies, but all will work together as a unified monitoring network. According to Jim Green, director of NASA's Division of Planetary Science, this model of international cooperation could then serve as a template for a similar venture on Mars.

December 20 , 2006: To India and Hawaii to Present the International Lunar Decade

The Planetary Society is committed to involving our members on every mission going to another world -- and, in the last few weeks, we have traveled to two ends of the Earth in pursuit of that goal.

During the first week of December, I went to Bangalore, India and presented the International Lunar Decade (ILD) to the Indian Space Research Organization -- India's space agency. I also presented ideas for public involvement in their upcoming Chandrayaan-1 lunar mission and for international cooperation among all lunar missions. read more »
