International Year of Astronomy 2009

The Universe, Yours to Discover

The International Year of Astronomy 2009 is a global effort initiated by the International Astronomical Union and UNESCO to help the citizens of the world rediscover their place in the Universe through the day- and night-time sky, and thereby engage a personal sense of wonder and discovery.

For The Planetary Society, the International Year of Astronomy is a continuation of the mission we have pursued since 1980. The International Year of Astronomy gives us an opportunity to bring our message to people around the world, to involve them in the increasingly international fleet of planetary exploration missions, and to encourage more people to take action to increase peaceful space exploration and decrease the risk posed to the inhabitants of Earth by threats from space.

We hope to provide participants in the International Year of Astronomy with information and experiences that help them understand our place among the diverse and wonderful worlds around us.

The Planetary Society...We hope that the worldwide events of the International Year of Astronomy in 2009 will focus public attention not only on distant stars and galaxies but also on our own solar system. Space is not just what we see at the other end of a telescope; we live in space, too, and it is as important to study our own neighborhood as it is to examine the universe beyond.
