Projects: EarthDials

EarthDial Newsletter No. 10

3 June 2004

The EarthDial and MarsDial Projects have been awarded the 2004 Sawyer Prize of the North American Sundial Society! Bill Nye and I are only the representatives of all of you and will emphasize that when we accept the award at the NASS annual meeting in August.

Two Worlds One Sun Many Voices:
Just as the MarsDials on the Spirit and Opportunity rovers have the word "Mars" engraved in seventeen different languages, Thomas Rackers (ED-14) has begun collecting the phrase "Two Worlds One Sun", which appears on the two MarsDials and all of the EarthDials, in as many languages of the Earth as we can gather. So far, we have Spanish, French, German, Italian, Latin, Romanian, Russian, Hebrew, Pashto, Urdu, Mandarin Chinese, Tagalog, and Korean. Please email us if you can translate the motto into a language that is not listed.

The project has no new dials since the last Newsletter, although tentative designations of ED-18 and ED-19 have been given to folks in Mississippi and Maryland who are almost ready. Meanwhile, on Mars, the Rovers of course continue doing fantastically well By now, there have been thousands of images that include the MarsDials. Check out the complete gallery of "Pancam" raw images available at http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/ .

Many of you have made great movies of your gnomon's shadow over a day: we now have links to all the animations. These are marvellous for educational purposes. Please continue to make them over the entire range of the seasons, so that by the end of the year we'll be able to see how the daily tracks change over seasons, over time of day, and over latitude!

As always, contact us whenever you have concerns or ideas, and keep us informed of your progress, especially improvements in your setup or your website, and (for those not yet online) your likely online date. We're changing Two Worlds!

Cheers, Woody
