EarthDial Newsletter No. 8

17 March 2004

Note that the March Equinox (Spring in the Northern Hemisphere, Autumn in the South) occurs at 0649 GMT this Sat., 20 March. The shadow of the gnomon will be a straight west-to-east line (no matter where you are located (except the Pole)!) and it would be great if as many of you as possible could obtain a series of images throughout the day of the 20th, or 19th or 21st.

News about EarthDials. There are now *13* EarthDials (in 6 countries) online 24 hours per day and they are:

ED-1 Seattle, Washington, USA (122 W, 48 N)
ED-2 Columbia, Maryland, USA (76 W, 39 N)
ED-3 Ross, Ohio, USA 85 W, 39 N)
ED-4 Irvine, California, USA (117 W, 33 N)
ED-5 Tegucigalpa, Honduras ( 87 W, 14 N)
ED-6 Costa Mesa, California, USA (117 W, 33 N)
ED-7 Fairfax County, Virginia, USA (77 W, 39 N)
ED-8 Valencia, Spain (0.4 deg W, 39 N)
ED-9 Atco, New Jersey, USA (75 W, 40 N)
ED-10 Bayan Lepas, Penang, Malaysia (100 E, 5 N)
ED-11 South Pole (90 S, indeterminate longitude!)
ED-12 Bellingham, Washington, USA (123 W, 49 N)
ED-13 Walcote, Leicestershire, England (1 W, 52 N)

Since the last Newsletter, we've added Walcote, Leicestershire, England and Bellingham, Washington state, USA. We're losing ED-11 at the South Pole because the sun is now setting for the next six months! Today I can just barely make out sunlight on the dial, but an actual gnomon shadow requires a bit of faith in the eye of the beholder. Our third Featured Dial of The Week is ED-7 (Virginia), which also has a short time-lapse movie of the South Pole dial's shadow. We will be cycling through all of the EDs for Featured Dial.

We have good prospects for new EDs in India, France, Spain, Latvia, Canada, Australia, and Norway (Spitsbergen at 78 deg N!), with inquiries from Suriname and Ecuador. In addition there are more US ones expected in Florida, Mississippi, Ohio, Utah, Massachusetts, Washington state, and California.   Our big push now is to get more non-USA EDs - we need to fill in those empty latitudes and longitudes around the globe! Anything you can do to help this will be much appreciated.

We're changing Two Worlds!

Cheers, Woody
