EarthDial Newsletter No. 4

Believe it or not, we *are* getting closer. Current plans are to launch within 10 days, by 20 February. So we want all of you to make whatever changes may be needed to have high reliability with your Webcam connections 24 hours per day - we're going to get a lot of hits! Also, please send us your 500-word statement, as outlined below, which we will have on the Central site - we must have this (please send both to me and to Hilda Taylor, who is an Astronomy undergraduate working with me on the project and the web pages - hilda17@u.washington.edu). Finally, please check your entry in the attached Table and make corrections, fill in blanks, etc. (send us the new information in the body of an E-mail message).

There are now 8 EarthDials online 24 hours per day and they are:

Notes and news. ED-5, 7, and 8 have particularly nice Websites - check them out. There's a great time-lapse movie of the moving shadow that ED-7 made at http://www.wsanford.com/webcam/earthdial/ani_01FEB04-s.html . ED-5 and 8 give the Web reader a nice overview of their home. ED-8 is made of 9 ceramic tiles and is actually situated in a pool of water (and will soon have a "tighter" view of the dial)! ED-2 is greatly helping ED-central in encouraging a high school student in Malaysia who has built his ED, but is having troubles with his Web connection. ED-3 hasn't been working for 2 weeks or so - we hope they rejoin us shortly!

We're shortly expecting England, Malaysia, South Pole, and perhaps Australia. In addition there are more US ones expected in Florida, Massachusetts, Washington state, and California.

We're getting excited at EarthDial Central as the time for launch gets closer - no later than 20 February, without any waiting for any dials that are not yet online. As always, contact us whenever you have concerns or ideas, and keep us informed of your likely "on-line date".
