Projects: S.O.S: Save Our Science!Administration Threatens to Veto Bill to Increase NASA FundingJuly 27, 2007 The U.S. Administration is strongly opposing passage of the House of Representatives Appropriation Bill (H.R. 3093) that would increase funding for NASA space science. In a “Statement of Administration Policy,” the White House promises that, if the bill passed by the House Appropriations Committee “were presented to the President, he would veto the bill.” The statement specifies that “the Administration does not endorse funding in excess of the request for Aeronautics, Education, and Science.” Click here to download and read the full statement (PDF 40KB) . Despite the Administration's position the House of Representatives passed the bill with more than a 2/3 bi-partisan majority. The Planetary Society supports the increased funding for science and believes the small amount -- about 1 percent -- added to the NASA budget is responsible and balanced. “Indeed,” says Executive Director Louis Friedman, “without that 1 percent, the space program is tilted strongly away from science, and the future of space exploration becomes very clouded.” Friedman noted that the 1 percent increase to NASA science in the House Appropriations Bill is less that 1/3 percent of the total bill. In fact, NASA’s total budget comes to less than 2 percent of the United States government’s discretionary spending. The Society believes that science funding is crucial to the conduct of the space program and to humanity’s future in space, and we continue to campaign in Congress to “Save Our Science.”
