May 2 - Chicago, Illinois - On the first Friday of every month, the Adler Planetarium hosts an evening of astronomy-related fun, including observing, lectures, demonstrations, and tours of the Doane Observatory.

May 10 - Schenectady, New York – Please join the Schenectady Museum & Planetarium for National Astronomy Day. Astronomy magazine has chosen the Suits-Bueche Planetarium as a partner for the national celebration of Astronomy Day. Enjoy Solar Viewing with telescopes set up by members of the Suits-Bueche Planetarium staff, Dudley Observatory, and the Albany Area Amateur Astronomers (weather permitting). There will be give-aways, a telescope raffle sponsored by Astronomy magazine and Meade Telescopes, and Planetarium shows at 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00 p.m. Admission is free with Museum/Planetarium admission.

May 10 – Boston, Massachusetts - Every spring at the 1st quarter moon the Clay Center Observatory at the Dexter-Southfield Schools teams up with the Amateur Telescope Makers of Boston to celebrate National Astronomy Day, a fun family-oriented festival of science. Join them for solar observing in the afternoon and night viewing after dark. Other activities include planetarium shows, laser light shows, kite making and stunt kite demonstrations, model rocketry, guest lecturers including Galileo himself, exhibits, demonstrations, and hands-on activities for all ages. May 10 – San Diego, California - The San Diego Air & Space Museum is celebrating their 5th Annual Space Day Celebration! This event has grown every year, and they hope with your help that this year will be the biggest yet! Enjoy meeting representatives from space organizations & local industry, hands-on activities, and special events. This is a great for all age's event and will be held in our Pavilion of Flight from 10am till 2pm.

May 10 – Towson University, Maryland – Bring your teenage girl to the Sally Ride Science Festival at the NASA Ames Research Center on May 10 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The festival features an inspiring talk by a featured speaker; Discovery Workshops for girls, given by local veterinarians, astronomers, microbiologists, and engineers; workshops for parents and teachers on ways to support girls' interests in science and math; and a Street Fair with hands-on activities, booths, food, and music.

May 14 – 17 - Schenectady, New York - The Schenectady Museum's Suits-Bueche Planetarium is hosting the 2008 Middle Atlantic Planetarium Society Annual Conference May 14 – 17, which will attract between 50 and 100 planetarium educators and vendors from surrounding states and states as far away as Maine, Florida, and Ohio. Planetariums at major and small museums, schools, colleges, and private facilities will be represented at the conference.

The conference will include the presentation of papers, vendor demonstrations, workshops, a visit to the Union College observatory, Planetarium shows in the Suits-Bueche Planetarium, outdoor observing of the night sky, and tours of the Schenectady Museum and its Collections & Archives.

May 24 - 26 - Oakland, California - Chabot Space & Science Center will be celebrating Mars Phoenix Landing. The event will be held on Saturday, May 24, 10am-6pm; Sunday, May 25, noon-5pm; Monday, May 26, 10am-5pm. General Admission $13 adult, $10 senior/student, $9 youth (3-12), free to Chabot members.

NASA's Phoenix Mission is scheduled to land on the Red Planet on Sunday, May 25. The mission is designed to study the history of water and search for complex organic molecules in the ice-rich soil of the Martian arctic region. Join us as we celebrate Martian exploration with activities including a Mars polar ice cap demonstration, compressor rockets, 3-D Mars image viewing, making your own Mars paper Lander, various Martian crafts. Toast the mission with Martian Perrier. On Saturday, join the Martian costume contest & parade! On Sunday, we'll be monitoring NASA's coverage of the landing on Mars. May 24 – 26 - Seattle, Washington - Pacific Science Center will be hosting a weekend of event from May 24-26 to warm up for the Phoenix Mission's polar landing. Planetarium shows will feature Phoenix content at 12pm, 3pm and 4pm daily. Watch the landing at the Science Stage at 4:30pm Sunday, interpreted by their knowledgeable planetarium staff. On Monday, May 26 at 2pm and 4pm, NASA Solar System Ambassador and Celestial North president/co-founder Greg Donohue will "Break The Ice to Get Better Acquainted with Mars", sharing the goals and initial results of this mission to unlock the watery secrets of the Red Planet.

May 25 – Pasadena, California – Come join The Planetary Society on May 25 for Planetfest '08 as we celebrate this historic Mars landing, commemorate past achievements, and speculate about discoveries to come.

On May 25, 2008, NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander will touch down near the north polar cap of Mars. On board the lander is a very special DVD, carrying Visions of Mars – a collection of 19th and 20th century stories, essays, and art inspired by the Red Planet – as well as the names of more than a quarter million inhabitants of Earth, including all Planetary Society members.

May 25 - Denver, Colorado – Please join the Denver Museum of Nature and Science - Phipps IMAX Theater for "Phoenix on Mars – Live!".

On Sunday May 25, the Phoenix Mars Lander will arrive at the Red Planet. Come and be a part of history, as the Museum broadcasts live NASA telecasts of the landing and the first images taken by the lander. Your host for the evening, space science curator Steve Lee, PhD, will explain the history of the mission and share more information about this fascinating planet. Snacks will be available while you're waiting for the ground breaking photos. Space Odyssey will also be open. Ticket-holders are welcome to come and go during the landing event. A full-scale model of the lander (on loan from NASA) is on display at the Museum until May 5.

May 25 – Chicago, Illinois - Join the Adler Planetarium for live coverage of the Phoenix Mars landing! The event will feature demonstrations and Q & A sessions. May 25 – Seattle, Washington - The Museum of Flight and the local chapter of the Mars Society will sponsor a celebration of the landing by the Phoenix Lander, NASA's next spacecraft to study the surface of the red planet. Local scientists and Mars exploration advocates will talk about the Phoenix mission and its mission objectives. The culmination of the afternoon will be a live broadcast from JPL of the landing, which is scheduled to occur at about 4:36 p.m. PDT.

May 25 - Alpena, Michigan – The Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan will be hosting an event for "Phoenix Landing". May 25 - St. Louis, Missouri – Pleas join James S. McDonnell Planetarium for "Mars Phoenix Lander" On Sunday evening, May 25; Mars will receive its latest visitor: The Mars Phoenix Lander. The latest spacecraft to explore the red planet will touch down at 6:36 pm with data and images relayed to Earth at 6:53 pm. The James S. McDonnell Planetarium will cover the event live, providing a real-time link to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where visitors will be able to see the very first images sent beck to Earth from this lander.

The event starts at 6:00 pm. It is free and open to the public.

Dr. Ed Guiness, Senior Research Scientist at Washington University's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences will be on hand to provide commentary and answer questions. Guinness is a leading scientist in the Mars Exploration Rovers program.

When NASA's Phoenix Lander parachutes from orbit and touches down on the outskirts of Mars' northern polar ice cap on May 25 at 4:36 pm PDT, it will join the Spirit and Opportunity Mars Exploration Rovers as NASA's active roster on the planet's surface. May 31 – St. Louis, Missouri - The annual meeting of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific will be held from May 31 - June 4 in St. Louis, Missouri, as part of the summer meeting of the American Astronomical Society -- in the form of a symposium with associated workshops.

This meeting will bring together everyone interested in astronomy and space-science education and outreach to discuss international, regional, and local programs for the International Year of Astronomy in 2009, which celebrates the 400th anniversary of the astronomical telescope. If you are interested in planning activities for 2009, this meeting is an excellent chance to learn more about what various institutions and organizations are proposing to do, and to coordinate your ideas with colleagues around the country and the world. There will also be model workshops on the weekend to demonstrate and develop techniques for reaching a wide range of audiences.
