The Giant Magellan Telescope

The Giant Magellan Telescope The Giant Magellan Telescope will have seven 8.4 meters that give it the resolving power of a 24.5 meter telescope. It is being built at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, on an 8,500 foot peak in the Andes Mountains. Testing using four of the seven mirrors is expected to begin in 2019, initial science operations begin in 2020 and all seven mirrors come online in 2024.
