Io tidal heating
Two maps showing different end models for tidal heating on Io. In the top case, tidal heating occurs in Io’s deep mantle resulting in most of its internal heat being released at the poles. In the bottom case, tidal heating occurs at shallower depths, in its asthenosphere, resulting in the majority of Io’s internal heating being released at Io’s equator and mid-latitudes.
