Layers on crater floor

Layers on crater floor Picture shows light-toned layers and dark material on bottom of a crater. Picture was taken by HiRISE under HiWish program on June 17, 2012. Location is 7.8 N and 352.8 E

NASA / JPL / UA

The layers shown in the image are significant because they may represent formation under a lake that was in the crater. Another way of forming the layers may be from groundwater cementing sediments. The image is a subimage of HiRISE image # ESP_027615_1880 that can be found at http://hirise.lpl.arizona.edu/ESP_027615_1880. The subimage was produced with HiView from the HiRISE site. It was then cropped and saved with Paint. I have written about this image and many others taken with HiWish on my facebook page (Jim Secosky).
