"Race to Mars" and "Mars Rising" Coming to the Discovery Channel

Discovery Channel Canada is launching two new series: "Race to Mars," a science fiction mini-series about the first human mission to the Red Planet, and "Mars Rising," a multi-part documentary.

The Discovery Science Channel will begin airing the documentary series "Mars Rising" in the U.S. on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at 9:00 PM. The series will air for six consecutive Tuesday nights. We will post U.S. air dates for "Race to Mars" when they become available.

"Race to Mars" will premiere in Canada on Sunday, September 23 at 8 p.m. ET/9 p.m. PT on Discovery Channel Canada and Discovery HD. The series will take you on a vicarious three year mission to Mars, with all the triumphs and trials such a journey might encompass. Michael Riley stars as Commander Rick Erwin, who leads an international crew of men and women. From equipment glitches to personality clashes, the story tries to paint a realistic picture of what might take place on a future expedition. More information on "Race to Mars " »

Once the science fiction mini-series concludes, Discovery will launch "Mars Rising," a six-hour companion documentary series that explores the science and technology being developed and tested today to make human missions to Mars a reality. Narrated by William Shatner, "Mars Rising" also features interviews with Planetary Society board member Chris McKay and advisor Buzz Aldrin, among others. The first segment will premiere on Sunday, October 7 at 8 p.m. ET/9 p.m. PT on Discovery Channel Canada and Discovery HD.

The Planetary Society thanks Discovery Channel Canada for their donation of the books and press kits to the contest.
