Spirit blends into the shoulder of Home Plate in this artist's rendition showing its position at Troy. The rover took this panorama on its Sol 743 as she descended from Husband Hill, heading toward Home Plate, the circular plateau occupying the center of the image. Click to see Spirit in the valley to its right. The MERs are about the size of a golf-cart.

A sunset postcard and a special shadow from Opportunity
Near sunset on sol 2847 (January 27, 2012), Opportunity gazed backward to the east-southeast and the distant line of peaks that mark the far rim of Endeavour crater. The setting Sun throws very long shadows from the very low-standing ridge that Opportunity, is in turn, standing on. In fact, Opportunity's own shadow is visible, a blurry speck standing on the ridge's shadow.

One of the main tasks for sol 14 was to shake the TEGA instrument to help some material pass through the outer mesh using a built-in mechanical shaker designed for this task. In this animation you can see movement of some material dumped onto the instrument that was caused by this activity.

This image shows the DVD provided by The Planetary Society to the Phoenix mission, which contains 250,000 names of people who signed up to send their names to Mars. It also contains "Visions of Mars," messages to future Martian explorers, science fiction stories and art inspired by the Red Planet. The DVD is mounted on the deck of the lander, which sits about one meter above the Martian surface, visible in the background.

Pretty picture: Fly through the aurora
Noguchi took this photo from his berth aboard the International Space Station on April 5, 2010, as the Station flew through Earth's aurora at 28,000 kilometers per hour. A geomagnetic storm was exciting an unusual level of auroral activity at the time. A Russian Progress module is visible docked to the Station in the middle ground.
