Make Comet Balls!

Use a styrofoam ball, glue, glitter, and anything else your imagination can come up with to make a fancy comet. Kids, have your parents or adult help you.

Materials:

  • 1" - 1.5" styrofoam balls
  • Glitter Glue (Elmers is fine)
  • Small bowls (margarine tubs work well) to sprinkle glitter and hold glue.
  • Straight pins
  • Metallic excelsior strips ( 4 per comet)
  • Metallic pipe cleaner (cut to make 4 per pipe cleaner)
  • Ziplock sandwich bags
  • Sharpie permanent marker
  • Foam 1" paint brushes

Instructions:

  1. Take the pipe cleaners and cut them into four equal sections.
  2. Take the excelsior and pre-make the comet tails by lining up 4 strips of excelsior and poking the straight pin through the end.
  3. Bend the piece of metallic pipe cleaner into a "U" shape and pole it into the ball.
  4. Hold the ball by the pipe cleaner "holder" and paint the glue over entire ball.
  5. Hold over bowl and sprinkle glitter
  6. Insert comet tail by poking the straight pin deeply into ball.
  7. Put your name on ziplock bag with permanent marker and insert finished comet.
