Catalog of Exoplanets

 399 Exoplanets
Exoplanets, also known as "extrasolar planets", are planets outside our solar system, orbiting distant stars. To keep track of this fast-changing field, the Planetary Society presents this list of exoplanets. Here you will find a complete and up-to-date registry of known exoplanets and what is known about them. By clicking on the name of any exoplanet you can view a dynamic animation of its orbit, along with more detailed information on its physical and orbital characteristics. To get information on column headings, mouse over the question marks. To sort by a column, click on the column title. To compare two planetary systems, check the boxes next to each, and click compare at the bottom of the page. For comparison with the exoplanets, we have also included in the list the eight "solar" planets, in orbit around the Sun. Check out the other catalog tabs above to find more information about detection methods, notable exoplanets, and a glossary covering terms used in the catalog. See bottom of this page for criteria that were used to determine what planets are in this catalog.

What's in our catalog? Generally, our catalog is inclusive of all sub-stellar objects orbiting stars near and far that have been announced or published in peer-reviewed journals. The vast majority of the catalog is composed of well-characterized planets around solar-like stars that have been published in peer-reviewed journals. The catalog does include planets that have only been announced, some objects more massive than 13 Jupiter masses (one common definition of the upper limit of "planets"), and some planets whose orbital parameters are not known very precisely. The catalog does not include planets around non-stars (e.g. 2M1207 b around a brown dwarf or pulsar planets) or probable planets inferred from radial velocity trends (whose masses and orbital parameters are very poorly constrained). The data in the catalog come from a variety of sources and are known to widely varying degrees of certainty.
