To me Neil Armstrong was a total Engineer, and it's this aspect of him that I like most and hope folks will appreciate. I hope that someone will make a film about him that will celebrate the man more than just the moon landing. I really like his NASA Oral History: http://www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/a11/ArmstrongNA_9-19-01.pdf My favorite photo of him is with the X-15: http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/246076main_E60-6286_full.jpg ... more »
A toast to the memory of Neil Armstrong

I'd like to toast the memory of a man by all reports of a most excellent brilliance which was, remarkably, surpassed by his shy humility. A man who performed a feat beyond epic heroism. For those too young to remember, in July, 1969, Neil Armstrong and two companions climbed into what was effectively a Volkswagen beetle augmented by a computer with slightly less processing power than your toaster. Then he let some guy light up under him one of the bigger bombs humanity has ever created and flew that Beetle ... more »

July 1969 was a very memorable time of my early childhood. I was 10yrs old, a young girl living in Florida, where my Dad was stationed in the USAF for a brief time. My family was preparing for his departure to Vietnam, for his one year tour of duty... scary times for us!
Living in Florida and being in the military, we were well aware of the Apollo program & its goal to land humans on the Moon. I was fascinated by their efforts & followed the few earlier Apollo missions into space. On the eve of the Apollo 11 ... more »
Armstrong as a Heroic Ideal

I wasn't born yet when Armstrong first set foot on the Moon.
My parents remember the night, even though they themselves were young and far-removed from the world of space travel and science. But even though I wasn't there, Armstrong was always a presence. From a young age you know his name, even if most of us (sadly) don't know the others that went after him. The culture itself provides such a powerful representation of Armstrong that even though I wasn't there to see the moonwalk itself, I feel his death in my bones.
There was something strangely comforting about the idea ... more »
