My Space Love Story: 1983, The Perseids and Women in SciFi

When I was ten, I was fortunate enough to witness one of the best Perseid Meteor showers. I had been watching Star Trek and Buck Rogers re-runs for months, inspired by the idea that I could someday be a space explorer myself. As I watched the first meteors streak across the night sky that night I knew that I was always going to be in love with the stars.

Today as we see the beginnings of our future, as we explore and expand out across our solar system and beyond, I remember the excitement and inspiration I felt in my heart as a kid. It's still there today everytime I look up at the night sky. I can't wait for the next chapter in humanity's space odyssey!

I have special memories of the Perseids 10 years later than the one you mention. My Dad and my son, Ky, headed up to the high Sierras where I used to work to spend a night and watch them. Dad was 70 and admitted he hadn't slept on the ground since he was 20. Ky was 12 and loving every minute of it. We watched some amazing streaks until about midnight, told stories, shared memories and then I asked Dad if he would rather sleep in a real bed. He was so gracious and grateful that night. My folks both shared a love and wonderment of the world and the stars.
