There are many reasons why space exploration is important. Most are critical but usually long range. The advancement of knowledge, the human need to explore, the fact that we must leave Earth eventually to survive, among them. I am not a scientist. Just an average reasonably intelligent person. To me space is awe inspiring, it stimulates the imagination. It makes me think about things beyond my everyday life. It is also humbling to get some understanding of the universe and what an extremely small piece of what exists we are. It has made me a broader minded person and keeps my mind fascinated and active. That's why it's important to average Joe me.
An asteroid or comet headed for Earth is the only large-scale natural disaster we can prevent. Working together to fund our Shoemaker NEO Grants for astronomers, we can help save the world.
