"The Conquest of Space"
Richard McConnell
December 10, 2012
As a boy I was entranced by the superb illustrations of Chesley Bonestell in the marvellous book "The Conquest of Space"(1952) by Willy Ley and Chesley Bonestell, which my father received from his book club. They geve me a lifelong sense of wonder and curiosity about space and space travel, and an enthusiasm for it. As a child in London I had almost been killed by one of Werner von Braun's V2 rockets (the first space rocket),which fell in September 1944, giving me a personal angle: I often like to say I am a child of the space age.
