July 2, 2008: Ustream: Be an Armchair Planetary Scientist

Chat Log

11:54 lyford : I gots my slides all queued up.... :)
11:55 elakdawalla : Can someone put in the URL for that -- and paste it in again when I start talking to the slides?
11:56 marslive : http://planetary.s3.amazonaws.com/misc/Lakdawalla_be_an_armchair_scientist.pps
11:56 nick601 : (and remember to record it this time!)
11:57 marslive : marslive = doug 2.0 for those wondering.
11:59 hendric : Anyone know offhand how to make the slides show up in a window?
11:59 lyford : hola doug!
12:00 lyford : open it from within powerpoint
12:00 hendric : first Euro2008, now wimbleton, you guys are having all the fun this summer.
12:00 lyford : i am just viewing the doc, not as a slideshow
12:00 lyford : fullscreen
12:00 marslive : Yeah - Murray's doing just...er..great
12:00 hendric : Thanks lyford
12:01 hendric : heh, I like now Emily says "Rapid release of 'raw' image data is now the norm"
12:01 hendric : For NASA perhaps.
12:02 hendric : Speaking of, has Juno commited to RAW image data?
12:03 marslive : I think Juno's camera is mainly an EPO addition anyway - I'd hope so.
12:03 KStu : Evening all... :-)
12:04 hendric : Afternoon Stu
12:04 lyford : props to UMSF on the last slide :)
12:04 tiffmich_2000 : dont forget to hit "record"! :)
12:05 lyford : play along at home
12:05 lyford : http://planetary.s3.amazonaws.com/misc/Lakdawalla_be_an_armchair_scientist.pps
12:11 KStu : ( test: please ignore)
12:14 ugordan : D,D,T
12:14 hendric : DI-on-E? I've been mispronouncing it all these years!
12:14 ugordan : hehe, sounds like the poison
12:14 nkprev : Hey, everyone!
12:14 marslive : I've been saying Dee-oh-neigh
12:14 KStu : Hey Nick...
12:14 hendric : I've been doing DI-on
12:15 nkprev : Had a HELL of a time refinding the link!
12:15 hendric : yeah, we need to suggest to Emily that she keep a link to the Ustream page in the blog.
12:15 nkprev : Yo, Stu, yo, Gordan, yo, Lyford!
12:15 ugordan : yo nick
12:15 nkprev : And yo, Hendric! yes!
12:16 nkprev : This is a great ppt; previewed it this morning, cool stuff.
12:16 hendric : You know where emily needs to give this presentation? At a science teacher conference!
12:16 nkprev : Definitely. Can you see the kids getting turned on by doing imagesmithing?
12:16 ugordan : True
12:16 Funkopolis : Or an art teacher
12:17 KStu : works very well in schools.. :-)
12:17 hendric : whatever happened to the UMSF wiki with E/PO presentations?
12:17 nkprev : Best of all, it's highly interactive; they can participate directly.
12:17 marslive : A UMSF wiki is something I'm really looking at
12:17 nkprev : That would be cool!
12:17 marslive : but I want it to tie into the Invision forum software, for membership etc.
12:18 nkprev : Sounds a bit challenging.
12:18 marslive : There are solutions, but I want to test it fully first
12:18 hendric : That would be awesome
12:18 marslive : I'd like to be able to say 'these 40 people can contribute' or whatever
12:18 lyford : i volunteer for any beta testing needs :)
12:19 nkprev : Me too!
12:19 hendric : I think wikis can control access.
12:19 marslive : Anyway - shutup and watch the show :)
12:19 hendric : Hell man, I lived it. :)
12:20 nkprev : Question re RGB image integration: Do they generally take a complete set each and every time, or is it hit or miss?
12:20 marslive : Hit and miss
12:20 marslive : Loads of MER drive-direction stuff is just one filter.
12:20 ugordan : depends
12:20 ugordan : Sometimes only two frames, such as red+blue
12:21 ugordan : You can fudge green then, e.g. synthesize it
12:21 nkprev : Kinda thought so. I've been trying to wrap my head around this (would love to step up to the plate & begin producing), but I'm so ignorant of this technology that I'm reluctant.
12:22 hendric : Only way you're going to get better is to try.
12:22 nkprev : True.
12:22 hendric : Learned that over and over. :)
12:22 KStu : I was reluctant at first Nick, best way is to just give it a go
12:22 nkprev : Yeah...that's how I learned avionics! :))
12:22 marslive : Go back and look at very early UMSF stuff - I was dreadfull!
12:22 nkprev : :))
12:22 marslive : James Phoenix stuff is just amazing.
12:22 nkprev : Indeed!!!
12:22 hendric : Sur is
12:22 Funkopolis : That's how I learned neurosurgery! The 3rd or 4th time around....
12:23 ugordan : How does his sw match the colors automatically?
12:23 marslive : No idea.
12:23 nkprev : Think I was one of your early patients.
12:23 hendric : What, you think surgeons didn't start with pre-dead people? :)
12:23 ugordan : That's some serious a$$kicking
12:23 Funkopolis : Possibly. I need my clamp back, let me know when you feel like sneezing.
12:23 lyford : did anyone else just lose audio?
12:23 hendric : no
12:23 nkprev : Nope
12:23 marslive : Nope - audio good here
12:24 bjorn_jonsson : I lost 'everything'
12:24 hendric : w00t!
12:24 KStu : I'm getting occasional breaks in audio, just for a moment at a time
12:24 ugordan : Try reloading
12:24 nkprev : Well done, Emily!
12:24 KStu : Good show Emily! :-)
12:24 nkprev : Suggestion: Direct link on TPS blog to the show; had a hard time getting here.
12:24 nick601 : yep, nice presentation!
12:24 marcof : good show and presentation Emily
12:25 BigBobUK : That was brill thanks Emily
12:25 marslive : GIVE ME QUESTIONS.
12:25 hendric : QUESTION: Have scientists expressed any interest in releasing real RAW images instead of prestretched JPGs?
12:27 ridingwrobots : QUESTION: any thoughts on amateurs contributing to science via things like click-working? do those kinds of programs really help? for example, there was at one point a program for amatuers to identify features in hirise images
12:27 nkprev : Q: is there any building interest in the professional planetary science community in establishing amateur collaborations as has been done in observational astronomy (i.e., the American Association of Variable Star Observers?)
12:27 KStu : QUESTION: any signs of change in images taken of "Holy Cow" yet? Will we be getting any higher resolution images of that feature?
12:27 marcof : QUESTION: do they use HDR techniques (in photography: multiple images with different exposures to enhance dynamic range) or are the cameras so sensitive it's not needed?
12:27 nick601 : QUESTION: there's a lot of dust on the Spirit and Opportunity camera lenses. Will future (long duration) missions have some sort of cleaning mechanism?
12:27 KStu : QUESTION: there seems to be a LOT of dust on CAssini's cameras now... is it affecting any observations?
12:27 Funkopolis : QUESTION: If the calibration patterns are known, why can't the colour-correction/combination be automated?
12:28 hendric : Question: ObESAQuestion: Will ESA provide raw images for any of its missions? There is a greater sense of participation when images are released live vs on the PDS.
12:29 ugordan : I'd be perfectly content with stretching only the maximum value
12:29 ugordan : I.E. not clipping dark levels to zero
12:29 nick601 : ESA provided all raw image data from Huygens :)
12:30 nick601 : ..but yes, in general their PR isn't as good as NASA
12:30 bjorn_jonsson : Clipping dark levels to zero has caused me lots of problems when processing the Cassini raws...
12:30 ugordan : It causes problems everywhere
12:30 ugordan : Not because of the actual clip, but several lowest DNs get clipped and away the details go...
12:30 hendric : QUESTION: Did you take any heat for discussing the Phoenix raw images?
12:32 nkprev : COMMENT: Might it be wise to draw a line between am image construction and result interpretation by pros? Understand the pros need not to be 'scooped' fully; maybe some protocols could be established.
12:33 ugordan : It's a fuzzy line, Nick...
12:33 hendric : I disagree, I think Galaxy Zoo has kinda proven that amateurs can be trained to distinguish small differences.
12:33 BigBobUK : Hence Galaxy zoo 2
12:35 nkprev : Main concern here is to preserve the 'right of discovery' to the pros; it's their bread and butter, after all. No easy solution seems evident.
12:37 marslive : Emily's talking about HRSC View = http://hrscview.fu-berlin.de/
12:37 tstn : ciao
12:37 ugordan : Nick, there were some cases of tension concerning beautiful mosaics (no scoop attempts) based on raws by amateurs, but let's better not go down that road now.
12:37 ridingwrobots : thanks for that, marslive!
12:37 nkprev : Understood.
12:38 KStu : you're a "communicator" Emily :-)
12:38 Funkopolis : And stating your bias = better journalistic integrity than most ;)
12:38 hendric : grey media: We are grey. We stand between the darkness and the light. :)
12:39 nkprev : Nature is a continuum...we are as we should be!
12:39 ugordan : Yes, but if you contrast-stretched that gray... :D
12:39 nkprev : :))
12:40 marslive : We live in the scientific underground. If you need a mosaic making, if you want an animation, and, if you can find us....
12:40 hendric : heh
12:40 nkprev : Who ya gonna call?...
12:40 nkprev : IMAGE-BUSTERS!
12:40 KStu : UMSF: the internet's last best hope for peace...
12:41 ugordan : A New Hope?
12:41 Joehaber1 : Hi all
12:41 hendric : "Look kid, for $50 I can get you a DVD of Rosetta images, but Smart-1 is going to cost you!"
12:41 Joehaber1 : Just got here
12:41 hendric : Welcome
12:41 lyford : Scientific underground... that is perfect!
12:41 KStu : hey Joe
12:41 hendric : http://planetary.s3.amazonaws.com/misc/Lakdawalla_be_an_armchair_scientist.pps has the slides
12:41 nkprev : LOVE the term...
12:41 nkprev : And, hey, joe!
12:42 hendric : UMSF: The dank, dark belly of planetary science
12:42 KStu : eeewwww!
12:43 nkprev : Kinda like the shadowy implications...
12:43 ugordan : dust specks: we divide them out for a bargain!
12:43 nkprev : ...but leave your tin hat at the door!
12:43 ridingwrobots : QUESTION: anything new with the "growths" on the phoenix lander leg?
12:43 nkprev : Ah! yes!
12:43 Joehaber1 : Hows the sun angle gonna change due to the seasons on holy cow
12:43 marslive : I tell you, if I go to Europlanet and Bernard Foing tells me that Smart 1 stuff will his the PSA in 'a few months' - I may resort to violence.
12:44 Joehaber1 : will it sublimate it?
12:44 ugordan : I can't wait for Rosetta data myself
12:44 KStu : reminder everyone: start questions with "QUESTION"... :-)
12:44 ugordan : When hell freezes over, I know...
12:44 Joehaber1 : oh ok
12:44 nkprev : Fortunately, gordan, you're young...
12:44 hendric : Doug: nobody cares about the moon, remember? I mean comeon, there are only two orbiters there.
12:45 * hendric trying to be sarcastic
12:45 marslive : FOUR..there are four :)
12:45 Funkopolis : Do I hear 6?
12:45 hendric : hah, right, forget the microsatellites.
12:45 Joehaber1 : Question... Hows the seasons gonna effect holy cow , will it sublimate it?
12:45 ugordan : Our four chief weapons are such diverse factors as...
12:46 ugordan : 2Hz
12:46 nick601 : QUESTION: any news on the public search for MPL?
12:47 KStu : QUESTION: Update on the TEGA doors..?
12:47 nkprev : Gord, ya lost me!
12:47 ugordan : The banding in the Cassini images frequency
12:48 nkprev : Ah! Once again, I expose my ignorance...
12:48 lyford : QUESTION: Ditto KStu for TEGA update :)
12:48 marslive : next q is mpl. then tega. :)
12:48 Joehaber1 : QUESTION: Will JPL do a Super PANCAM with Phoenix?
12:50 nkprev : QUESTION: Noticed that the Phoenix temps have remained pretty constant since landing. When do we expect the winter extremes to become evident in the MET data?
12:50 Funkopolis : Manufacturing defect? Crap, that means my TEGA in the kitchen may be faulty as well.
12:50 ugordan : OOoooo
12:50 KStu : roll on the drums...
12:51 ugordan : fanfare
12:51 ZeroOne : Hi Doug (if the cohosting experiment worked)
12:51 KStu : (doug combs his hair frantically!)
12:51 ugordan : lol
12:51 ugordan : do we have a liftoff?
12:51 lyford : Expert Enthusiast!
12:51 ZeroOne : He's invisible!
12:51 JohnMillerShow : he is.
12:52 BigBobUK : Wow!
12:52 nkprev : HA!
12:52 JohnMillerShow : gotcha!!
12:52 ugordan : Wowwww
12:52 Joehaber1 : Cool
12:52 nkprev : Hey, Doug!
12:52 ZeroOne : I wish he were invisible!
12:52 KStu : wow... it's like FOX News :-)
12:52 JohnMillerShow : its good
12:52 ugordan : Our On-scene Reporter (TM)
12:52 Agrajag : LEGO man
12:52 nkprev : Actually, Doug's audio is much better then Emily's!
12:52 BigBobUK : That's very impressive
12:52 ugordan : He's got a nice blocky appearance to him :S
12:53 KStu : very good audio from Doug's raw image ;-)
12:53 nick601 : squint and it goes away ;)
12:53 nkprev : Damn, this technology is coming along fast!
12:53 Boulder_Rocket_Scientist : First successful Over-The_Shoulder on planetary.org!
12:54 ugordan : Yeah, next thing you know well be launching flagships to outer solar system at around 2020!
12:54 hendric : I think some stacking might improve the quality. :)
12:54 Funkopolis : But the bottom-left is all empty space... Let's get a nasatv feed in there or something. Or an image slideshow.<g>
12:54 JohnMillerShow : yes!
12:54 ugordan : Is that the Shed TV, doug?
12:54 KStu : bring back any souvenirs?
12:54 lyford : LOL
12:54 ugordan : woot!
12:54 JohnMillerShow : if you could visit one planet.. which would it be and why!?
12:55 Boulder_Rocket_Scientist : We're all just oohing and aahing.
12:55 KStu : bye Doug...
12:55 hendric : QUESTION: Have you created any business cards/swag cards for giving to recalcitrant PIs who doubt the value of raw data?
12:55 marslive : No - I have a baseball bat for that.
12:55 hendric : doh! I missed doug's question window.
12:56 hendric : I want to print out 1 meter tall versions of my poster, the bbq poster, and some of the other things we do and hand them out to PIs to show what we can do.
12:56 KStu : us??? demanding?!?!? ;-)
12:56 Joehaber1 : I wish nasa would do a core sample return mission
12:56 nkprev : QUESTION: Rats...that was too quick! I was going to ask you guys to discuss the Mars orbiter aging infrastructure possible problem
12:56 JohnMillerShow : uhhhh
12:56 BigBobUK : Awww
12:56 lyford : that was a good question, too
12:56 Funkopolis : QUESTION: Is there a chat next week?
12:56 KStu : wow... she vanished fast...
12:56 hendric : Don't worry, we'll be here another 1/2 hour :)
12:56 ugordan : This was fast!
12:57 Joehaber1 : Damn when she goes she goes!
12:57 nkprev : Yeah, but she's working, can dig it.
12:57 hendric : Funk: She said something about making this a regular gig.
12:57 Funkopolis : sweet
12:57 nkprev : Anybody wanna talk about future Mars orbiters?
12:57 KStu : I think she's hoping for weekly... maybe...
12:57 lyford : sometimes it jives with my lunch break...
12:57 lyford : so that would be nice
12:57 nick601 : good show, thanks for the chat
12:57 elakdawalla : OK the recording is saved
12:57 nkprev : I worked nights yesterday, so free now.
12:57 elakdawalla : Sorry I should have waited a few seconds before blinking out :)
12:57 KStu : well done Emily, good show
