July
30, 2008: Ustream: Sadly, Unrecorded
Chat Log
09:52 dragonsyoung : howdy space junkies
10:15 SpaceEnthusiast : BLORT
10:52 dragonsyoung : breff in 8 mins
10:59 elakdawalla : Hey all, for those of you who want to watch the briefing,
it's on NASA TV's MEDIA CHANNEL, not public
11:00 elakdawalla : Go to http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/
11:00 elakdawalla : Starting now.
11:00 ugordan : wow, that stream window is SMALL
11:00 KStu : Thanks Emily... watching it now :-)
11:13 dragonsyoung : wow thats lot more variation then i expected
11:13 KStu : useful seeing that rock for scale...
11:19 ugordan : They mentioned optical microscope imagery of the soil,
I didn't notice it in the raws?
11:20 KStu : me neither...
11:21 KStu : we'd probably have seen it 20x if it had been there ;-)
11:21 jamescanvin : No OM images in the last update I downloaded a couple
o hours ago
11:21 SpaceEnthusiast : Damn, I got hosed! been watching the ISS
reply. :(
11:21 dragonsyoung : http://fawkes3.lpl.arizona.edu/images/gallery/lg_2855.jpg
not it?
11:22 jamescanvin : no
11:22 ugordan : new images up on http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/phoenix/images/new-latest-images-collection_archive_1.html
11:23 ugordan : *sigh* looks like the raw images are overstretched
11:24 SpaceEnthusiast : Dude, I WANT that for my desk!
11:24 SpaceEnthusiast : I'd pay $20 for one of those.
11:25 KStu : would go nicely with my MER models :-)
11:26 Funkopolis : I'll sell you a bead and some string for $20!
11:26 KStu : lol
11:27 Funkopolis : You'll have to kick in your own mars probe to stick
under it, though
11:27 Funkopolis : (Delivery NOT included)
11:27 hendric : better be a hollow cylinder.
11:28 Funkopolis : So, a reed and a string?
11:29 hendric : Like scratching your bum between your legs.
11:31 ugordan : Looking at the triple color scoop montage it really shows
how the RAC has a sweet spot for focus.
11:32 hendric : Hmmm...Could they watch for sudden temperature changes
in the thermometers on the mast and jump to a wind indicator picture? Probably
not I imagine.
11:32 marslive : The RAC can pull focus
11:35 KStu : short but sweet...
11:36 alro613 : yip
11:36 elakdawalla : Yes, short. I could go live now but becuase it's
so early I am going to wait until the time I posted. In the meantime I'll
start getting a blog entry ready...
11:36 jamescanvin : I was expecting some phone in questions, oh well.
11:36 KStu : ok Emily, go write! :-)
11:36 dragonsyoung : sounds good
11:37 alro613 : Kind of too bad they won't be able to sample "Snow
Queen" - it's right there just begging to be sampled!
11:37 KStu : guess journalists have been shunted onto the Obama story today
James...
11:37 marslive : Whatever's just under the soil will be essentially the
same Alro.
11:38 ugordan : The calibrated shot of the scraped-off stuff looks interesting.
Pretty glassy, almost looks like a holographic sticker :)
11:38 hendric : I'm wondering if we could catch a wind gust in the act
by using the thermometers on the mast to trigger the pictures of the wind indicator. Might
work for dust devil hunting! (prods Doug)
11:39 elakdawalla : Someone here could help me with a summary of today's
plan. All I wrote down was sample acquisition (but not delivery) for TEGA.
11:40 Funkopolis : D'oh! I didn't know there'd be a quiz. I
forgot to take notes.<g>
11:41 elakdawalla : Detention for you.
11:41 KStu : I didn't pick up much of a plan... more like "What we
did at school recently..."
11:41 Funkopolis : Oh! Couldn't I just copy/paste, I mean, write
out lines?
11:42 marslive : No reason why it couldn't be done in principle Rich, but
I'd say it's something to reserve for the extended mission
11:42 jamescanvin : I only have "Get" in my notes for tosol.
I don't remember anything else mentioned for tosol
11:42 KStu : The Phoenix team have really pulled out all the stops when
it comes to making animations and graphics, don't you think? Good work...
11:43 dragonsyoung : confermed sol9 actions and test runs all go.
more sighns of the layers of ice/salt and more high res images of the dig zone
11:45 dragonsyoung : topagraphic maping shows 15in of variance
11:47 ustreamtech : Emily, are you there?
11:49 nilstycho : If anybody is killing time here, SpaceX has posted their
5-engine update. http://spacex.com/press.php?page=42
11:51 dragonsyoung : cheers for the link
11:55 ugordan : SpaceX really know how to encode videos *rolleyes*
11:55 alro613 : hehehe
11:55 alro613 : sounded good tho' ;)
11:56 ugordan : I hope they're better at rocket science err.. rocket engineering
11:56 alro613 : lol
12:01 alro613 : Been watching the NASA-TV Public all day.. Busy day @ ISS
.. at least they have the toilet working ;)
12:01 dragonsyoung : why theres no time to use it ...
12:01 marslive : Bring on the questions!!
12:02 ugordan : Can multiple filter images constrain what salts it can
be?
12:02 Funkopolis : See this is why there's value to human spaceflight/exploration. An
average toungue will tell ice from salt ;)
12:03 KStu : Reminder everyone... please put "Question" in front
of questions... thanks :-)
12:03 hendric : What was the primary news?
12:04 hendric : My A/V didn't start until right when she said "And
that's the primary news"
12:04 marslive : They're going to get the first tega sample tosol, document
it, then deliver it
12:04 Funkopolis : QUESTION: Doesn't TEGA get dirty/contaminated with each
sample? How do they clean it? Or do they?
12:04 nilstycho : "I've got plenty of energy from my solar panels,
so team has upped my work hours from 9a - 4p to 8a - 6:30p. No OT :( but more
science :-)"
12:05 Matt` : great question Funkopolis
12:05 nick601 : QUESTION: what is the probability of Phoenix's microphone
being turned on at some stage? it looks pretty windy there, judging by the telltale
movement
12:06 MarkWyz : Answer: There are multiple TEGA "ovens"
12:06 nick601 : yes, 8 I believe
12:06 hendric : I think the carrier gas would clean out the previous sample
12:08 Funkopolis : Great answer, thanks
12:08 dragonsyoung : Question: is there a chance at the end of the mission
they will try the near imposable to get close to snow queen?
12:10 KStu : Question: we've seen dirt clods or spills on the lander deck...
any concern other instruments might be contaminated by further spills..?
12:11 Funkopolis : waitwait... a ball on a string...and it went wrong?<g>
12:11 tiffmich_2000 : QUESTION: and... are they going to try and continue
to get a color image of SnowQueen?
12:12 hendric : QUSETION: Will they look for wind gusts using the thermometers
on the mast to trigger pictures of the telltale?
12:13 tbruckner : Question: what kind of results are expected from the
microscope, is there anything specific that they are looking for?
12:13 oaidaraul : hy
12:13 nick601 : question: is the degree of erosion of surface rocks at
the phoenix landing site higher than that observed at other sites on Mars, and
is this erosion ice related?
12:13 MarkWyz : QUESTION: Is there any fuel left for the descent engine? After
primary mission could Phoenix "Hop" to another site?
12:14 Funkopolis : 200 million miles... 2 feet short. Sigh
12:15 oaidaraul : i don't have sound
12:15 marslive : The sound is working well from here.
12:15 hendric : check your mute? PC and player
12:16 hendric : The descent engine is no longer pressurized, they released
the helium right after touchdown.
12:16 MarkWyz : Thanks
12:16 ugordan : And the hydrazine probably froze
12:16 MarkWyz : I knew it was a long shot
12:17 tiffmich_2000 : I think they released all the fuel after landing...
12:17 Funkopolis : Ahh, the helium release expains all those silly alien
voices.
12:17 HiRISE_Boulder : QUESTION: The purported ice layer a few centimeters
down (as hinted at in the under-lander image) looks quite hard and solid. What
tests were done on the scoop to see how it would be able to dig in and grind
a solid, smooth chunk of ice?
12:17 ugordan : Does anyone find it curious how small grains of sand were
lofted onto the deck during landing?
12:18 ugordan : How large a turbulence would that have to be?
12:18 ugordan : (not aimed at Emily)
12:18 marslive : It'd be a hellishly complex CFD simulation to figure that
one out.
12:18 ugordan : I was very surprised considering the rare atmosphere
12:19 nick601 : kicked up by the descent engines perhaps?
12:20 ugordan : Clearly, but the engines are below and launching stuff
radially away on the ground
12:20 marslive : I could imagine them kicking it up in plumes that would
expand out and then around the edge of the lander deck
12:20 nick601 : I understand that the solar panels weren't unfurled for
15 minutes due to suspended matter
12:20 oaidaraul : i have sound!
12:20 oaidaraul : hello
12:20 ugordan : This would have to curve up and back, serious backdraft
12:20 oaidaraul : did they drilled the surface of jupiter's moon europa
yet?
12:21 tiffmich_2000 : QUESTION: Do I notice a lot of aquamarine in your
wardrobe? :)
12:21 hendric : Well, the plume would be hot too, and would rise over the
land, sucking back part of the dust blown off.
12:21 oaidaraul : when will they send a probe?
12:21 marslive : Not yet Oaidaraul, hopefully one day - but it's quite
a long way off yet
12:21 KStu : not for a long time oaidaraul
12:21 nick601 : not for a few years yet :)
12:21 hendric : Europa? Not any time soon.
12:22 ugordan : And we have a concensus!
12:22 nick601 : \o/
12:22 oaidaraul : can we make a moon city by the end of 2050?
12:22 oaidaraul : usa is paying 200bilio0n dolars for the first mission
12:22 MarkWyz : with enough money
12:22 MarkWyz : a better question is should we
12:23 oaidaraul : what will NASA do with scram jet technologies?
12:23 dragonsyoung : Question: will the extented work hours mean a shorter
primary mission?
12:23 dragonsyoung : compleetion
12:23 KStu : QUESTION: are the Phoenix team surprised by how much public
interest there's been in Phoenix?
12:23 oaidaraul : Question:what will NASA do with scram jet technologies?
12:23 ugordan : I think Peter said they're not, Stu :)
12:23 Funkopolis : QUESTION: I just saw a report on new moons of Jupiter
being discovered... Are they particularly small and hard to find, or do we still
suck at finding moons? How can we find exoplanets when we're missing local
moons?
12:23 ugordan : Are you? ;)
12:23 sysboy : QUESTION: Do they plan to release raw experiment data as
quickly as they do pictures?
12:24 KStu : naaah... but the Twitter feed has been amazingly succesful
12:24 HiRISE_Boulder : QUESTION: There haven't been many updates about
what's happening with MER. Any updates on when Opportunity may descend into Victoria,
or anything else of interest?
12:24 oaidaraul : question: is it true there are artificial made structures
on the moon?
12:24 KStu : no
12:24 oaidaraul : JUST A RETARD WOULD BELIVE HES ALONE
12:24 hendric : Raw experiment data is the "reward" for scientists
for workingon the mission. they'll get to keep it private for a time, usually
6 months, and then release it to the PDS.
12:25 nick601 : question/comment: star-density data from the Spitzer Space
Telescope is being interpreted as suggesting that the Milky Way has two spiral
arms rather than four. How long before we see an external image of our own Galaxy?
;)
12:25 apropos : just one more question about a phoenix image with something
which seem like a shell..do you have seen this image very amazing..i see nit
in a french web site...today(very serious web site)
12:25 Funkopolis : Yes, there are apollo descent stages and leftover moonrovers
on the moon. Some crashed propbes.
12:25 HiRISE_Boulder : oaidaraul: Sure. A couple LEM bases, some flags,
and a handful of instruments. Next question?
12:25 oaidaraul : i was kicked for caps?
12:25 HiRISE_Boulder : Ack. Beat me to it!
12:25 lexcarter : there are cars littered around on the moon
12:25 oaidaraul : what will NASA do with scram jet technologies?
12:25 KStu : no, for inappropriate language
12:25 ugordan : QUESTION: Any new gossip on the missin Phoenix screw? :)
12:26 ugordan : missing*
12:26 nilstycho : I think they open up kibo and peek inside in 1.5 hours...
right?
12:26 oaidaraul : retarded is a medical term for lack of IQ
12:26 KStu : I know, but a bit rude ;-)
12:27 ugordan : hehe
12:27 Funkopolis : It's the Martial Spring People trying to make contact!
12:27 oaidaraul : Question:explain string theory plssss
12:27 Funkopolis : Martian .. argh
12:28 engine : In the image of holy cow some material can been seen sticking
to one of the lander's legs. Any theories about what this might be.
12:28 ugordan : Must be a part of the spacecraft <--> scientific
instrument interfaces that neither engineers or scientists take responsibility
for
12:28 nilstycho : (Yeah, checked: 1:52 PM PST is Kibo ingress on NASA TV)
12:29 TTTNY : question: To follow up on the question about rasp operations,
is it correct that the rasp will be able to accumulate a little pile of ice shavings
which can be scooped up by the shovel?
12:29 launchwatcher : How is spirt doing surviving winter? When will spring
arrive for it?
12:29 oaidaraul : Question:does NASA get envolved in the Virgin Galactic
spaceline?
12:30 dragonsyoung : Question:in the AAS breff wilky way new dara was shown
2 sprial arms do you expect GLAST to show more of same?
12:31 HiRISE_Boulder : QUESTION: There haven't been many updates about
what's happening with MER. Any updates on when Opportunity may descend into Victoria,
or anything else of interest?
12:31 oaidaraul : is this a TRUE ufo? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GG55jRdyRAM
12:32 ugordan : That's a sweet image
12:32 Funkopolis : If it's an object that's flying and you don't know what
it is, yes. Doesn't mean it's an alien spaceship though
12:32 ugordan : Though blurry as hell :D
12:32 ugordan : The Earth image, of course
12:34 apropos : today another earth like planet was discover , with more
than 300 planets discover right now..do you think it is possible to estimate
the percentage of stars in the milky way with planets...50 % more or less..i
think it's time to do stats about this subjet...
12:35 MarkWyz : more data needed
12:35 nilstycho : AAA! http://spacenerd.blogspot.com/2008/06/odysseys-in-safemode.html
12:36 nilstycho : "You heard it here first, kids.Phoenix had previously
gutted their plan of all MRO overflights because of the uncertainty of our radio's
behavior (no "incidents" in 7 days ... that's pretty good, I think).
It was short-sighted, and they might pay the price now. Fun, fun!"
12:36 marslive : Odyssey in safe mode? Oh hells bells.
12:37 marslive : Someone phone ESOC
12:37 HiRISE_Boulder : QUESTION: Any promising hits on your reader MPL
search ... something that shows promise rather than a "probably not but
we'll send it to the HiRISE Team anyway"?
12:38 ugordan : QUESTION: With Cassini's primary mission coming to an end,
what are your thoughts on it and its discoveries? More or less than what you
expected?
12:38 oaidaraul : i think europa has a ocen full of aqua ppl
12:38 hendric : What's the status on the next Cosmos mission?
12:38 nick601 : remember what Arthur C. Clarke said about it!
12:38 ugordan : good question, hirise!
12:39 dragonsyoung : http://www.spitzer.caltech.edu/Media/releases/ssc2008-10/release.shtml
12:39 ugordan : Anyone know how often ODY enters safe mode?
12:39 marslive : I remember two during MER so far
12:40 marslive : One not long before Viking/Voyager craters.
12:40 marslive : And one on the rim of Vic.
12:40 Funkopolis : RETRACTION: I'm a big idiot. I found the 'new
moons of jupiter' article and it's 5 years old. Sorry.<g>
12:40 Matt` : duh :p
12:41 oaidaraul : nuke europa and if water spits we can go and swim
12:41 alro613 : @Funkopolis: Ya, I was searching the Web for any articles
on New Moons, and they were all for 2003..
12:41 alro613 : i was getting all excited there, Funkopolis!
12:41 Funkopolis : It was only 1 links away from _new_ news on Universe
Today... Whoops.
12:42 alro613 : hehe.. tis all good.
12:42 badd53 : Emily for McCain 08!
12:42 oaidaraul : QUESTION: how far is voyager now and will it pass a object
soon?
12:43 nilstycho : McCain for Emily 08!
12:43 KStu : good question oaidaraul :-)
12:43 Funkopolis : McCain would make a terrible Emily! Emily for
Emily 08!
12:43 lexcarter : what year is this again?
12:44 dturnbull : is it possible to turn mars into a earth like planet?
12:44 MarkWyz : 43
12:44 apropos : today another earth like planet was discover , with more
than 300 planets discover right now..do you think it is possible to estimate
the percentage of stars in the milky way with planets...50 % more or less..i
think it's time to do stats about this subjet...
12:44 Funkopolis : I don't suppose the last one was insured, eh?
12:44 nick601 : Q: is there any further information on the nature or origin
of the dark material on Iapetus?
12:44 HiRISE_Boulder : QUESTION: Any updates on the status of the Mars
Sample Return mission? Is it permanantly on hold?
12:45 V1977 : QUESTION: Are we any closer to discovering just how Iapetus'
equatorial ridge formed?
12:45 ZackyV6661-1 : hey people if you like avenged sevenfold and want
to chat with other fans come to vengeancemusictV6661 and chat it's all about
a good time so come and have fun!!!!!
12:45 ugordan : Sooo... with Odyssey in safe mode, when can we get Mars
Telecon Orbiter there? :D
12:45 oaidaraul : u make me sleepy
12:46 Matt` : I want a book like Sagan's Pale Blue Dot about the solar
system, but with all the new data we've gathered over the past 15 years
12:46 Matt` : :<
12:46 hendric : Cambridge Photographic Altas of the Planets is good.
12:48 oaidaraul : QUESTION:will we say ,,a small step for me , a giant
leap for mankind'' on the surface of mars?(not the chocolate)
12:49 MarkWyz : Question: Are the Voyagers aimed at any particular stars
and how long will they take to get there?
12:49 Funkopolis : QUESTION: Whe's the next chat?
12:49 Funkopolis : When
12:50 oaidaraul : Q: are the voyager probes increasing speed?
12:50 dragonsyoung : Question:any thoughts on the new spitzer data only
2 sprial arms?
12:51 voiceofthelight-1 : hello
12:51 MarkWyz : Question: Where are you going?
12:51 Funkopolis : You've earned it
12:51 apropos : good vacations you deserves it :-)
12:51 dragonsyoung : http://www.spitzer.caltech.edu/Media/releases/ssc2008-10/release.shtml
12:51 oaidaraul : i bet your a great mom!
12:51 alro613 : WHAT??!? vacation?!? -- hahaha.. Good for you.. enjoy the
time off! ;)
12:51 pixelstuff : What was the latest theory on the Voyager velocity issues?
12:52 ugordan : It wasn't Voyager but Pioneer
12:52 dragonsyoung : ow thast so kool awsem
12:52 hendric : Go James!!
12:52 KStu : good work JC! ;-)
12:52 jamescanvin : No ustreamfrom me thou
12:52 hendric : Ha, chicken
12:53 * hendric thinks Emily should rope Doug into ustreaming.
12:53 apropos : thanks for you work..chat and blog
12:53 V1977 : Thanks Emily!
12:53 nick601 : good chat, thanks all :)
12:53 Funkopolis : Thank you, and have a great vacation
12:53 concestor17 : Thanks Emily!
12:53 nilstycho : Thanks!
12:53 KStu : happy hols!
12:53 MarkWyz : Thanks Emily
12:53 oaidaraul : here goes the fame
12:53 dragonsyoung : thanks
12:53 alro613 : Thanks Emily!!!
12:53 msnewel : Thanks Emily, enjoy your time off!
12:53 formalhaut : thanks emily and have a nice holiday
12:53 marslive : Doug thinks Hendric forgot that Doug's going on holiday
soon as well :)
12:53 oaidaraul : go away ppl!!! the show is over!
12:54 dragonsyoung : ty for the updates on other missions
12:54 ugordan : And thanks for the answers!
12:54 badd53 : Just don't let Neil deGrasse Tyson guest Blog
12:54 badd53 : that guy is pretty high on himself
12:55 V1977 : Emily sure is keeping still :)
12:55 dragonsyoung : lol
12:55 KStu : bet she's great at staring-out copmpetitions... ;-)
12:55 Funkopolis : I don't think this is a staring contest any of us can
win...
12:55 elakdawalla-1 : Drat, I forgot to record this one
12:56 KStu : lol
12:56 hendric : doug: We could nominate Rui as the guest blogger
12:56 hendric : vlogger? vidlogger? vogger?
12:56 ugordan : Now you have to go back and redo it, Emily!
12:56 V1977 : I think its more of a perplexed 'You still here?' look!
12:57 KStu : I feel kind of sad about the Milky Way losing 2 arms...
12:58 hendric : Yeah, but we gained a bar. Much cooler.
12:58 KStu : we had a bar anyway, didn't we?
12:58 KStu : now we've a bigger bar...
12:58 badd53 : it still has "minor" arms
12:58 KStu : with plasma TV and more choice of beer... ;-)
12:59 ugordan : I thought we didn't have a bar "before"
12:59 dragonsyoung : http://www.spitzer.caltech.edu/Media/releases/ssc2008-10/release.shtml
12:59 V1977 : 2 arms, no active galactic nucleus. Wot a rip!
12:59 KStu : a bar has been suspected for yonks...
12:59 ugordan : We could always shove some stuff down that central hole
to make it active
12:59 ugordan : If its fireworks we crave
01:00 dragonsyoung : yes but this is data we know this much for sure
01:00 dragonsyoung : i cant wait to see what comes outa GLAST
01:00 V1977 : Yeah there's a few things on this planet that'd fit the bill!
