 02:59 nkprev : Yo!
 03:00 nkprev : Hey, Emily!
 03:00 slang : hi
 03:00 Funkopolis : Hello!
 03:00 mikegee : Hello Emily
03:00 djellison : When will you have 16 into MMB fodder Dan?
03:00 slang : wait wait BA ain't here yet!
 03:01 badd53 : you go girl
 03:01 slang : i count on it :)
 03:01 lepo : NASA PR...
03:02 Superstring : Do you think we'll find life on Europa?
03:02 lepo : already found that crash site on Mars?
03:03 Funkopolis : I read recently about Phobos' orbit spirialling in on Mars... Would this have any effect on human colonization/exporation or is the timescale too long/risk too small?
03:03 nkprev : Based on your review of the upcoming mission schedules, are you seeing any integration, or is the trend still towards "one-shot" single-goal non-complementary missions?
03:04 badd53 : should I go to my sons graduation, or watch Phoenix landing?
 03:04 dotdk : lol
 03:04 EdSG : lol
 03:04 slang : yes
 03:04 slang : about time too! ;p
03:04 nkprev : Pray for a wireless connection at the ceremony!
03:04 ZeroOne : big haystack little needle
03:05 RobertGrey : Is there any chance that we will see images of the Beagle II lander crash site?
 03:05 TheBadAstronomer : Hi Emily!
 03:05 Funkopolis : Hey BA!
03:05 Superstring : We martians have got ringside seats
03:05 EdSG : Hey Phil! Welcome!
03:05 lepo : Hi Dr Plait!
 03:05 Superstring : hi Phil!
 03:05 TheBadAstronomer : Hey everyone!
03:05 SanitysEdge : Can we help find the lander?
03:06 nkprev : Re the MPL search: Does the HiRISE team intend to cover the landing ellipse at different sun angles, hoping to catch specular reflections?
 03:06 jewelisms : Hi Phil!
 03:06 nkprev : Hey, BA!
03:06 shanep : is there any discussion of sending spirit or opportunity to look at the Viking landers condition?
 03:06 EdSG : Help Find the Lander : http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/BadAstronomyBlog/~3/287820317/
 03:07 lfriedman : hi
03:07 lepo : Awesome precision in mission planning!
 03:07 SanitysEdge : Thanks, ed.
03:07 nkprev : Integration: Understood...was wondering if something was emerging similar to the NASA Mars campaign for other targets.
 03:07 djellison : Hi Lou :)
03:07 Rtambree : Hi Bad Astronomer - saw you in London two weeks ago - in the pub
 03:07 lyford : Hola compadres
03:08 ZeroOne : Opportunity: total mileage about 7 miles. Yeah, I think it's ready for a global trek to a Viking lander.
03:08 lfriedman : Doug -- nice to be connected to you
03:08 lepo : Emily, what's your typical day schedule like?
 03:08 TheBadAstronomer : Hi Lou!
03:08 dotdk : If Opportunity lost use of its IDD do you think that the mission will continue to get funded?
03:08 lfriedman : i am testing the idea of keeping my eye on you
 03:09 ZeroOne : They're all here.
 03:09 slang : niiiiice
 03:09 KStu : Hi UMSFers!
03:09 lyford : shout out for UMSF :)
03:09 nkprev : Hey, Stu! Nick here!
03:10 nkprev : Nice to "meet" you, Mr. Friedman!
03:10 fordprefect : is it ok for vegitarians to eat animal crackers?
03:10 TheBadAstronomer : NASA makes decisions?
 03:10 djellison : They use a magic 8 ball.
03:10 ZeroOne : Did enjoy the "White Rick Series" Thanks!
 03:10 jewelisms : lol@ fordprefect
 03:10 lepo : Good one, Phil  :->
03:10 Funkopolis : Does NASA have the authority?
 03:10 TheBadAstronomer : Hi Jewel!
03:10 SanitysEdge : Called congress and they always say try again later.
 03:10 jewelisms : Hi Phil!
 03:10 ZeroOne : Rick=Rock (rick rolled!)
 03:11 TheBadAstronomer : Ah Rtambree, I thought I recognized your accent. :-)
03:11 KStu : Hey Nick...! Good to 'talk' to you, BA :-)
03:11 shanep : how do you get your ideas for the planetary radio q&a's?
03:11 jewelisms : I'd kind of like to be in a pub in London about now...been a long week
03:11 lepo : Emily, what do you think of the role of the ISS for actual science?
03:11 PR1NC355 : would you go to visit some planet or moon if you could?
03:11 Superstring : When will NASA put a webcam on the Moon?
03:12 ZeroOne : I feel llike she's looking right through me!
03:12 KStu : Emily: how excited are YOU about Phoenix..?
 03:12 ZeroOne : Phoenix?
03:12 TheBadAstronomer : Emily, you are featured on the front page of UStrem right now
03:12 slang : yeah elakdawalla you'll never be able to answer all questions, just pick one that you notice
03:12 KStu : The probe ZeroOne, the probe... :-)
03:12 slang : the chat goes even more nuts at BA's chats.. horrible :)
03:12 SanitysEdge : Put QUESTION: in front of your questions or something to help her pick it out.
03:13 lfriedman : The ISS isn't much for science, but it (like the shuttle) is an extraordinary achievement.   Now if they can only use it for an exploration purpose.
03:13 bry-man : ??whats the status on the solar sail program??
03:13 fordprefect : Despite what you just said, how can we convince nasa NOT to spend money putting a man on mars?
 03:13 canal8_mdq : hello Emily
03:13 Funkopolis : SanitysEdge - good idea.  Way to live up to your name!
03:14 nkprev : Emily's point about the engagement factor of manned spaceflight is extremely important....no bucks, no Buck Rogers.
03:14 lepo : logical fallacy: false dichotomy...
 03:14 ZeroOne : Yeah it's not zero-sum -- robots and humans
03:14 Rtambree : QUESTION: Will there be another solar sail attempt?
03:14 Funkopolis : QUESTION: What was your favourite robotic mission and favourite human mission?
03:14 jewelisms : QUESTION: What type of mission would you most like to see $$ spent?
03:14 slinted : Emily: thanks for the chat!  Question: have you noticed a substantive change in mission outreach and PR because of the involvement of the space enthusiast community on the internet?
03:14 lfriedman : We are still working on the goal for Cosmos 2 flight -- and we haven't raised all of the funds necessary yet.   In the meantime we are beginning work on the long-lead hardware items for the new spacecraft and evaluating options for a new launch vehicle.
03:14 lepo : Phobos Station? Cool!
03:15 lfriedman : We will be publishing a web update within a couple of weeks about the solar sail.
03:15 Funkopolis : QUESTIONS: Wouldn't Diemos be safer if they can get a deal on a 200 million year lease?
03:15 Superstring : Question : Does NASA plan to put a webcam on the Moon?
 03:15 dexgod : That'd be neat
03:15 jewelisms : actually you just answered my question as I was typing..
03:16 lepo : Example: Colbert Report
03:16 KStu : QUSTION: are you worried that when the public see the Phoenix landing site they'll think it is really dull compared to the MER sites, and dismiss the mission?
03:16 shanep : moon cam would be boring.  Mars has more active atmosphere
03:16 nkprev : QUESTION FOR CURRENT TOPIC: in your opinion, is space media coverage competing favorably in the new deluge of entertainment and information?
03:17 Boreas : What I really liked about the Colbert segment was how excited he was.
03:17 ugordan : Q: If it were up to you, where would you send the next flagship mission to?
03:17 dotdk : The Garrett interview on Colbert Report was awesome :-D
03:17 Funkopolis : Colbert was almost as excited as I was.
03:17 slang : MER aimed for flat too, didn't it?
03:17 ugordan : yes, was totally cool
03:17 Funkopolis : I'm not ashamed to say I giggled like a schoolgirl.
03:17 nkprev : Hey, Gordan! Nick here!
03:17 fordprefect : Question: Why didn't we build the ISS in a lagrange point?
03:17 djellison : Phoenix might be comparable to the Purgatory Dune pan from Opportunity.
 03:17 ugordan : hi Nick :D
03:17 Funkopolis : (I AM ashamed that I was dressed as one, but that's another story)
03:18 badd53 : I thought Phoenix was all about what's under the surface
 03:18 lepo : LOL with Funkopolis  :-D
 03:18 Boreas : LOL Funkopolis
03:18 dotdk : fordprefect: The shuttle can't go there
03:18 Rtambree : Thanks Lou for your answer about the solar sail. Good luck with that. Hopefully not a Russian rocket again
03:18 slinted : and, hopefully, dust devil movies :)
03:19 nkprev : Probably not much choice there, RT....$$$
03:19 fordprefect : Well, do we have anything at one of those points?
03:19 dotdk : JWST will go there
03:19 SanitysEdge : We should stuff radio telescopes in the lagrange points and have an awesome single radio telescope with a huge diamter by means of infertometry
03:19 lepo : Emily, what's all this on the shelf in the background? Action figures? :)
03:19 nkprev : Nothing manned, if that's what you're thinking.
03:19 djellison : Yeah - had things gone differently, this lander would have ended up at Meridiani :)
03:20 lfriedman : Russian rockets send our astronauts and deliver cargo to the space station, and delivered both Mars Express and Venus Express --- so you can't characterize all Russian rockets the same.
03:20 RyeSeronie : QUESTION: Is there any hope for a future ship building yard orbiting earth?
03:21 lfriedman : Gotta go, thanks Emily and all participants.
03:21 nkprev : QUESTION: Was there a particular UMSF mission that really turned you on to space? For me, it was Mariner 9.
 03:21 jewelisms : Thanks Lou!
 03:21 ZeroOne : Lou's left the building!
 03:21 badd53 : thank you Mr Friedman!
 03:21 Funkopolis : I was in 5th!
03:21 lyford : QUESTION: Do you think that mass media outreach inevitably suffers from "hyperbole bias" and leads to a distortion of science and exploration?  Or can the public understand science without it being framed or spun?
 03:21 nkprev : Good question.
 03:22  * lepo slaps VideoGamesShow-1
03:22 ZeroOne : Lyford: Like the Chandra discovery?
 03:22 KStu : like supernova remnants..? ;-)
03:22 Boreas : Should NASA, ESA, Russian Space Agency etc. work towards merging into a single global agency?
03:22 Rtambree : QUESTION: What's your favourite Sci-Fi film from an accuracy viewpoint?
 03:22 ugordan : Armageddon
03:22 lyford : @01, yes, other than wow lookkit da pretty pictures
 03:23 ugordan : haha
03:23 djellison : Question : Have you heard from any of the Student Astronauts since the early MER days?
03:23 ZeroOne : We need American Science Idol (or country of your choice)
03:23 SanitysEdge : That would be pretty neat I guess.
03:23 KStu : accuracy... has to be RED PLANET... ;-)
03:23 ZeroOne : Colbert: Hail Xenu!
 03:23 NormBleac : agreed
03:23 slang : BBC website does try to cover space issues ... news.bbc.co.uk

03:25 Rtambree : QUESTION: Whose science policy is better? Obama? Hilary? McCain?
03:25 nkprev : QUESTION: There are several competing proposals for Jupiter & Saturn flagship missions. Any intel re which one appears to be gaining favor?
03:25 cacambo43 : lol "truthiness" is space reporting
 03:25 cacambo43 : I mean IN space reporting
 03:26 lyford : thx
 03:26 glennhudson : BLADE RUNNER!
 03:26 nkprev : 2001
03:26 ZeroOne : Not a sci-fi fan? Throw him out!
 03:26 JackC : 2001 - definately
 03:26 KStu : (she's an ARMAGEDDON fan but just isn't admitting it! ;-) )
 03:26 ugordan : I KNEW it!
 03:26 nkprev : Behave, Stu!:D
03:26 Funkopolis : QUESTION - Why does so much anti-science/creationist nonsense come out of Texas and Florida?  You'd think the NASA presence would be a pretty good example of the 'power' of science.  Is it just because they're such big states and the loonies are loudest?
 03:27 lyford : @Funkopolis - don't ferget Huntsville in ALABAMA
 03:27 Funkopolis : EXACTLY
03:27 ZeroOne : They're in uiversity and they write like this: omg i wanna go 2 space!!!1!

03:32 SanitysEdge : QUESTION: How far do you think humanity will reach into space in our lifetime?
03:32 lepo : Emily, I'm reading that Astronaut Yi is sick in hospital (Soyuz "landing"). What do you think of her achievements?
03:32 Superstring : QUESTION: What could be responsible for the Pioneer Anomaly?

03:32 RyeSeronie : well hopefully I will live long enough to see it
03:32 mixkxel : Are there any news about Fobos-Grunt?
 03:32 cacambo43 : I heard she was released, lepo.

 03:59 dotdk : lol
 03:59 EdSG : lol

04:00 EdSG : Alright guys, see you around!
04:00 Funkopolis : slang - I don't think the 'mid-surgery' phase would be suitable for videocast

 04:01 badd53 : it's already archived
04:01 badd53 : click on the Vido clips
04:02 Funkopolis : Really?  Shoot, if I'd known they were archived, I'd have tried to make her swear
04:02 jewelisms : I'm outta here, too.  This was a lot of fun.  I hope she does another one soon
04:02 lepo : I have to admit, there's something to this ustream thingie!
04:02 cacambo43 : hmm... so when Emily writes reports, do they become TPS Reports?
04:02 Funkopolis : I keep missing answers to read the chat and vice versa :(
 04:03 lepo : same here
04:03 djellison : It's not perfect, but I think it works really well - and I think blog+ustream is a great way of building a rapport with viewers/readers.
04:03 Funkopolis : And on a trinary star, are the TPS reports in triplicate?
04:03  * lepo not native tongue
04:03 cacambo43 : Yes, the multi-tasking gets confusing at times
04:03 badd53 : maybe we should use the Comment thing for questions
04:03 badd53 : and the chat for chat
 04:03 NormBleac : good one
04:03 Funkopolis : Wouldn't that involve emily constantly having to refresh her browser page to read them?
 04:04 NormBleac : autorefresh
04:04 lepo : She may get them per mail, too
 04:04 badd53 : should happen automatically
04:04 Funkopolis : You'd think that may interrupt with the flow.  I think the QUESTION: tag is a good idea too.
04:05 Funkopolis : If only we could convince the spammers to prefix their comments with SPAM:
04:05 Funkopolis : Then we could automate banning 'em
04:05 lepo : A left/right split like on Bloggingheads with Emily and Phil would be Teh Hawesome!
 04:05 badd53 : ha
 04:05 cacambo43 : Brain overload!
 04:05 cacambo43 : I think I'd preferentialy be watching Emily.
04:05 lepo : good cop, bad cop
04:06 lepo : Emily lacks the galaxy model of SCIENCE...

04:07 cacambo43 : But she could MAKE one
04:07 lepo : And why didn't Phil mention his book?
04:07 Funkopolis : Yeah, she needs a set like Phil.  And props.
 04:07 cacambo43 : Well, he's not THAT much of a glory hound...
 04:07 cacambo43 : right?
04:07 Funkopolis : Maybe the Dallas Cowboy Sports Figure of Science
 04:07 lepo : Ack.
 04:07 cacambo43 : lol
04:08 lepo : Well, there are Slingshot maneuvres in astronomy
04:08 Funkopolis : "The supernova ejects the stellar material like... well the football flying out of this little guy's hand"
 04:08 cacambo43 : ha ha
 04:08 lepo : XD
04:09 lepo : Hello, Ustream-Bot; where are you from? :-P
04:09 Funkopolis : "The universe is actually shaped like a giant foam hand"
 04:09 Funkopolis : "Which is clearly #1"
 04:09 cacambo43 : lol
04:09 Funkopolis : i dunno how well it works, but it could be a way to popularize science to a whole new demographic.
04:10 cacambo43 : "Using the running-back model to illustrate the Higgs Field in Contemporary Physics Education"
04:10  * lepo struggling with what pun to choose
 04:10 cacambo43 : New paper
04:10 Funkopolis : "Orbits of Ejected Comets - nature's Hail Mary Pass"
 04:10 Funkopolis : New asteriod detected: IU930923520HUT
04:11 lepo : For real, Funkopolis?
 04:11 cacambo43 : lol
04:11 Funkopolis : No.  Not really.
 04:11 lepo : D'oh!
 04:11 cacambo43 : Emily's still logged in - twice?
 04:12 lepo : She's a multidimensional person...
04:12 Funkopolis : Good.  She can use our football suggestions, which are frankly, _excellent_.
 04:12 cacambo43 : quite
04:13 lepo : Oh I know: when you use a "real" chat program, that's the trailing "-1"
