The Planetary Society BlogBy Emily LakdawallaLROC spots Russian "monument" to International Women's DayMar. 19, 2010 | 19:25 PDT | Mar. 20 02:25 UTC
There was a piece of the Lunar-Reconnaissance-Orbiter-spots-the-Lunokhods story that I was intrigued by but just didn't have the time this week to investigate properly. So I sent a note about it to Nancy Atkinson in the hopes that she'd take it up. She did! Wander over to Universe Today to learn about the Lunokhod mission's International Women's Day memorials, still visible from space today.

Has anybody spent an afternoon researching why NASA puts out a picture of a heart shaped nebula on Valentine's day, yet?
The "International Women's Day" is about as artificial as Valentine's Day (to me in retrospect; -- there was no observation of valentine's day). It is a just custom you were raised with and the observation felt and feels kind of natural.
The fact that the IWD was supported by the state definitely favored the formation of the eights. But, if they could drive that rover 37 km in 4 months (!!, Oppi did 20 km in 6 years), twisting the rover twice probably wasn't that big of a deal..
Seeing the eight and the peculiar "faces" of the lunokhods brings a smile to my face and child memories/feelings back. Definitily sweet :)
