A Mars Exploration Rover spinoff?
Jun. 6, 2006 | 14:00 PDT | 21:00 UTC
This morning a friend of mine emailed me a link to someone else's blog posting with the title: "$125,000 record player runs on Mars Rover motor." This I had to see. A Mars Exploration Rover spinoff?Allegedly, this contraption is a $125,000 turntable, whose motor is "the same that they used in the Mars Rover!" Credit: avbuzz.com | As far as I can tell this important news item first entered the 'blogosphere' through a different weblog, which in turn links to the Hong Kong?-based website which is marketing this monstrosity, the Clearaudio STATEMENT. Anyway, I was unable to verify the claim that the motor involved in spinning this turntable has heritage from the Mars Exploration Rovers (in fact it's not clear which Mars Rover they were talking about!) But this picture and its associated story was just silly enough that I had to post it. Hey, if the Mars Exploration Rovers can carry something as seemingly anachronistic as a sundial, I see no reason why it's inconsistent for a product spinoff from rover technology to be a turntable for spinning vinyl LPs! Actually I have met an audiophile who can prove to you, with appropriately expensive equipment, that an analog recording sounds better than a digital one, so I do not mean to poke too much fun at the people out there who are salivating at the sight of this machine. Well, maybe I do.
