The first thing I did when I landed today was to call work and find out what happened. Congratulations to everyone who is working or has ever worked on Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter for such a perfect day! But particularly, congratulations to Dan McCleese and his team for finally, on their third attempt, getting their Mars Climate Sounder to Mars. Finally, the failure of Mars Observer has been overcome.

It's a great day for Mars, and it clearly inspired our Executive Director Lou Friedman to muse on what's coming next for NASA. It would be great if we could look forward to many more successful, well-funded missions such as this one.
