2003 UB313, that larger-than-Pluto body in the Kuiper belt, has a moon but still no name because the various IAU committees involved still haven't figured out what a planet is, and whether 2003 UB313 is one, so it's not even clear which committee should be naming it. Fortunately, the situation for other recently discovered bodies isn't nearly so murky. Take, for instance, the two new moons of Pluto, which have so far been called S/2005 P1 and S/2005 P2. I understand that the discovery team is considering what to name them. If anybody wants to share any ideas with me, go ahead; I'll be happy to forward them on to Alan Stern. He says: "Here are some ground rules: the names must come from Roman mythology and they must have a logical connection to one another and to either Pluto or Charon (or both)." |
